The Akai DR16pro is a 16-track digital hard-disk recorder/editor, the “pro” evolution of the DR16 (1995-96), built by Akai professional M.I. Corp. It records 16/20/24-bit linear PCM and, on this version, supports 96 kHz sampling (DVD mastering), with 24-bit 128x-oversampling A/D converters and 20-bit D/A converters, internal processing at 24-bit.
It handles like a tape machine (transport, punch-in/out, auto-punch, a “Take” function for five alternate takes per track, Undo) while offering random-access non-destructive editing: the jog/shuttle wheel and up to 109 autolocate points recall an edit point instantly. A built-in 16-channel digital mixer provides two aux sends, a stereo digital mixdown bus, 99 storable snapshots with fades and full dynamic automation via MIDI; an optional board adds a 16-channel 3-band digital EQ.
The rear panel carries eight analogue inputs on 1/4" jack (HI/MID/LOW gain, built-in preamps), sixteen analogue outputs plus a stereo master, AES/EBU and S/PDIF digital I/O, a word-clock input, a SCSI port (up to six devices: hard drives, magneto-optical, JAZ) and five option slots for interface cards (SCSI-B, MIDI, ADAT IB804A, SMPTE, RS422/Sony 9-pin, Bi-Phase). Up to eight units chain master/slave for 128 tracks. Operation can be remoted via the DL16 (Remote Controller/Mixtab) and MT8, and an SVGA monitor connects through the SuperView option.
