The Sony DMX-R100 is a compact 48-channel digital console unveiled in 1999, aimed at music production and TV post. At around $20,000, it inherited part of the OXF-R3's know-how in a desktop format with a built-in colour screen.
It offers 48 virtual input channels, 36 analogue inputs (the first 12 channels having switchable A/B inputs), 24 motorised faders with 1024-step resolution and a master fader. Processing provides four-band parametric EQ, high-pass/low-pass filters and dynamics (compressor/ducking, expander/gate) on the channels, with 8 matrix buses, 8 sends, 8 returns and 12 inserts. Automation — snapshot or SMPTE-driven dynamic — covers all parameters.
Conversion runs at 24-bit up to 96 kHz (44.1 / 48 / 88.2 / 96 kHz). Four slots take optional I/O cards: TDIF, ADAT Lightpipe, AES/EBU, analogue XLR, MADI or TRS inserts. Praised for its immediate ergonomics, the R100 had a Version 2.0 that notably strengthened surround capability. It remains a reference among the compact digital consoles of its generation.
