History & design
The DPS16 (Digital Personal Studio) is a compact digital production station launched by Akai Professional in 2000. It combines, in a single desktop chassis, a hard-disk multitrack recorder (16 physical tracks and 250 virtual tracks, 10-track simultaneous recording and 16-track playback) and a 26-channel digital mixer (16 'track mix' and 10 'input mix') with 3-band EQ, four auxiliary sends and scene memories. It is one of the first consumer recorder-mixers to offer 24-bit/96 kHz (16/24-bit resolutions, 32/44.1/48/96 kHz sample rates). The front panel provides eight analogue inputs (1-2 as XLR/TRS mic/line combos with phantom power, 3-8 as TRS line, input 8 switchable to hi-Z for guitar), sixteen channel faders plus a master fader, and six 'Q-Link' knobs emulating an analogue mixer's feel. The effects section offers four channels (up to 52 types via the optional EB4M expansion board, 56-bit path). Storage relies on an internal 20 GB IDE hard drive, complemented by a SCSI connector (external drives, MO, CD-R/RW burner). Rear connectivity includes coaxial S/PDIF digital I/O, MIDI (with MMC) and a footswitch jack.
