Our take
History & design
The Fairlight Prodigy is a fully integrated digital audio production, post-production and mixing system, announced in 2000 (AES Paris) and aimed at the mid-level post and broadcast market. It combines in one package a 24-track disk recorder, an audio editor and a fully automated 12-bus (36-channel) digital mixer, based on FAME technology and the MFX3plus engine.
The 40-bit floating-point DSP core and the 24 channels of analogue and digital I/O sit in an 8-rackspace chassis that can be located remotely from the control surface. The surface offers 16 assignable, touch-sensitive 100 mm motorised faders. Automation, dynamic or snapshot, covers levels, mutes, pans, aux sends, EQ and dynamics, with full save and recall. Disk storage allows mixing 16-, 20- and 24-bit tracks within a single mix. A Prodigy 2 version (around 2002) added QDC (Quad Digital Channel) technology, like the rest of the range (Merlin, MFX3plus, Fame2), as a prelude to the DREAM consoles.
