Our take
History & design
The Fostex VM200 is a compact digital mixing console launched in 1999, designed as the mixing section of a personal studio built around the ADAT format. It combines eight analogue input channels (the first four on XLR and balanced jack with phantom power and an insert point, the next four on unbalanced jack) with eight ADAT optical digital inputs, plus a stereo S/PDIF input.
Every channel offers a four-band parametric EQ; two internal stereo effect processors provide reverbs, delays, modulation effects and pitch-shift. Conversion is 20-bit with 32-bit internal processing, the internal sample rate fixed at 44.1 kHz (up to 48 kHz on external clock). The surface has eight 60 mm motorised faders, twelve rotary encoders and a large backlit display; a 100-scene memory and MIDI Controller automation round out the package. The VM200 was often paired with the VR800 hard-disk recorder (8 tracks, 16-bit), forming a small self-contained digital recording system.
