The Yamaha AW4416 ("Professional Audio Workstation") is a digital audio workstation launched in 1999. It combines in a single unit a 44-channel digital mixer whose processing is directly inherited from the O2R console (4-band parametric EQ and dynamics on every channel, static and dynamic automation), a 16-track hard-disk recorder (up to roughly 130 virtual tracks), an 8-pad sampler and, optionally, a built-in CD-RW burner for mastering (HDCD versions).
Recording is done at 16 or 24 bit, 44.1 or 48 kHz, with 32-bit internal processing, 24-bit converters (64x oversampling in, 128x out) and a stated dynamic range around 104 dB. The surface features 17 motorised 60 mm faders, a 320 x 240 backlit LCD, assignable encoders and context function keys. A YGDAI expansion slot accepts mini-format cards to add digital I/O (ADAT, AES/EBU, TDIF...).
Selling around $3,800 with hard drive and burner, the AW4416 became a home and project studio benchmark, competing directly with the Roland VS series. It was later followed by the lighter AW2816 and then the AW16G/AW1600.
