History & design
The Amek Big by Langley (1992) is a fully in-line, digitally-controlled analogue mixing console designed by Graham Langley for British maker Amek. The 'by Langley' suffix, introduced in the early 1990s on the Big, Recall and 501 consoles, marks the direct involvement of the brand's chief designer.
Each channel strip carries two audio paths (CH and MIX): the CH section has mic and line inputs, the MIX section has Buss and Tape inputs, with a flip switch to swap them. Routing relies on 12 busses wired to parallelled outputs — enough to feed a 24-track machine with no repatching — alongside 8 aux sends and a 4-band EQ derived from the Angela. The Big came in 28-channel (56 paths) and 44-channel (88 paths) versions, plus 4 stereo line inputs and 4 stereo FX returns.
Its SuperTrue automation, driven by an Atari STE and developed with Steinberg, handles faders, mutes and most switches with full recall. Amek added a party trick: Talking Recall, where a sampled Rupert Neve voice walks the operator from one control to the next during recall. Priced at £13,500 plus VAT in 1993, the Big offered facilities previously reserved for desks ten to twenty times more expensive.
