Our take
History & design
The Soundcraft Ui16 is a compact digital mixer launched in 2015 alongside the Ui12. It has no physical controls at all: the entire interface is served by an on-board web server and shown in the browser of a computer, tablet or phone, over Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet. Up to ten devices can control it at once, each with its own monitor mix.
I/O comprises eight combo mic/line inputs, four XLR mic inputs, two Hi-Z instrument inputs and a stereo RCA line input, for sixteen channels in total. Outputs include the main stereo (XLR and jack), four XLR aux sends and two headphone outs. Every channel has a four-band parametric EQ, a high-pass filter, a compressor, a de-esser and a gate; outputs add a 31-band graphic EQ, and the system carries dbx AFS2 feedback suppression, DigiTech amp modelling and three Lexicon FX buses (reverb, delay, chorus).
Originally conceived in Australia by SM Pro Audio, later acquired by Soundcraft, the Ui16 runs at 24-bit/48 kHz and includes a two-channel USB recorder/player. Its rugged format and multi-device control made it a lasting hit in the entry-level segment.
