The Spirit 328XL is the circa-2001 evolution of the Spirit Digital 328 that Soundcraft launched in 1999 to bring digital mixing to home studios and small venues. It carries over the 328 platform: 16 mic/line inputs with padless UltraMic+ preamps, 24-bit conversion, a 56-bit internal engine, ADAT and TDIF digital returns, onboard Lexicon effects and dbx dynamics, 3-band parametric EQ on every channel and 100 mm motorised faders with snapshot automation. Soundcraft's core idea was to make the console behave like a classic 8-bus analogue desk rather than a computer with faders: usable straight away, no manual needed.
The 328XL is its extended version and the end of the digital Spirit line. The exact scope of the input and bus expansion over the original 328 remains to be confirmed against period Soundcraft documentation.
