History & design
The Soundcraft Spirit Digital 328 is a 32-input / 8-bus digital console launched in 1998 for the project studio and small production. Its philosophy is explicit: to work like a conventional analogue 8-bus console rather than 'a computer with faders', to the point where it can be used without opening the manual.
It offers 16 mic/line inputs with padless UltraMic+ preamps and 16-channel ADAT/TDIF digital interfacing, plus stereo AES/EBU and S/PDIF I/O; at mixdown the capacity rises to 42 inputs. Each channel has a 3-band parametric EQ, 4 auxiliaries, 2 onboard Lexicon effects sends and 2 dbx dynamics processors. The 100 mm faders are motorised with snapshot automation.
On the audio side, the A/D and D/A converters are 24-bit delta-sigma types with 128× oversampling, with 24-bit internal processing on 56-bit buses. Compact (~21×28 in) and light (~14 kg), made in the UK, the 328 established itself on release as one of the first genuinely affordable professional digital consoles (launch price ~$4,995).
