History & design
The Axum by D&R (D&R Electronica, Netherlands) is a fully modular digital audio mixing and routing system designed for broadcast infrastructure: on-air radio, self-op, production and voice-tracking. Its philosophy separates the control surfaces (fader panels, CRM module) from a 19" engine rack housing the power supply, the DSP engine and the input/output cards.
The core provides a 1280 × 1280 routing matrix and extensive signal processing on up to 128 stereo channels, assignable to sixteen stereo mixing buses and sixteen monitor buses. The surface scales from a small 4-fader desktop to large production formats (up to 128 faders). Modular connectivity covers Dante (AoIP), MADI, AES/EBU and analogue mic/line via plug-in cards.
The Axum's singularity lies in its open control protocol MambaNet: every hardware element (faders, keys) is represented as a 'node' and its functions as addressable 'objects', allowing free, scriptable surface mapping — a highly unusual approach among broadcast consoles. Up to four surfaces can share a single engine to create independent studios.
