Intech Studio ZONA: price, specs and the XY multitouch MIDI pad

0

Expressive controllers are having a moment, and Intech Studio intends to push its modular take on them. The brand is unveiling the ZONA, an XY MIDI pad with a high-resolution capacitive multitouch surface backlit by a 9×9 RGB LED matrix, joining its Grid controller system.

A touch plane for playing gestures

The ZONA turns sliding fingers into continuous control streams. You sweep the surface to drive the X and Y axes, and it can track several contact points at once: one hand sends multiple modulation paths at the same time. The RGB matrix under the surface gives real-time visual feedback — position, zones, states — as you play, and a side button handles page navigation.

It all talks over class-compliant USB MIDI, so no drivers: plug the ZONA in and it works with any DAW, instrument or visual tool. Intech names Ableton Live explicitly, but also TouchDesigner and Resolume, a sign the brand is aiming at producers, VJs and stage performers alike.

The strength of the Grid system

The ZONA’s real argument is that it belongs to the Grid ecosystem. Through Intech’s magnetic interface, the module shares power and configuration with the rest of the range: you assemble buttons, faders, encoders and now an XY pad into one coherent control surface. Programming happens in the Grid Editor using Lua, which opens a rare level of customisation — beyond MIDI, the ZONA can send HID keyboard commands, drive the mouse or act as a gamepad.

So this is far from a gimmick pad: the ZONA is conceived as a building block of a bespoke controller, in the spirit of the pad grids now appearing, like the Novation FLpad. The difference is the continuous expressive axis rather than a trigger grid.

Expression: the real battle

The expressive-controller market is getting crowded — think of the Aodyo Loom MPE controller — and each one looks for its own way to capture the musical gesture. The ZONA bets on the touch surface and total freedom of mapping: nothing is fixed, everything is programmed. Paired with a step sequencer, it can ride filters, effects and synthesis parameters live while a pattern runs.

My take

The idea is appealing: an XY touch plane that does not live alone but slots into a controller you design yourself. At $199 the ZONA is priced aggressively against standalone XY surfaces, and Lua programming opens uses well beyond music — visual performance, automation, software control. The capacitive-touch bet needs to be proven under the fingers, because precision and glide are everything on this kind of surface. But Grid’s modular approach is the real trump card: you are not buying an object, you are growing an instrument. Pre-orders are open, with units expected in November.
