Our take
History & design
The Synclavier PostPro is the post-production variant of New England Digital's Direct-To-Disk system. It pairs a hard-disk multitrack record/playback tower with a Macintosh control station, forming a digital editing workstation for sound-to-picture: dialogue editing, Foley, effects and film and television music.
Descended directly from the Synclavier lineage (polyphonic sampling and hard-disk recording), the PostPro stands out for its random-access operation, SMPTE timecode lock and autoconform from CMX edit decision lists. On the digital side it interchanges with the outside world via AES/EBU, S/PDIF, SDIF and ProDigi. Storage relies on SCSI hard drives with WangDAT backup. Some precise specifications (exact channel count, per-channel resolution) remain to be confirmed from period documentation.
