Our take
History & design
The Libra is a fully digital mixing console developed by AMS Neve in the late 1990s for music production, post-production and broadcast. It belongs to a three-variant family sharing one architecture — Libra, Libra Post and Libra Music — and is built around an assignable control surface: controls are not hard-wired to a fixed channel but recall the processing of the selected path into the AFU (Assignable Facilities Unit) via each strip's ACCESS key.
Processing is entirely in the digital domain, with Total Reset of all settings and full dynamic automation. Any channel can be mono or stereo, the EQ is a four-band fully parametric section with graphical curve display, and the desk offers surround bussing and monitoring. Audio is converted by 20-bit ADCs/DACs (up to 32 ADC and 32 DAC per I/O rack) and the I/O racks link to the processor rack over MADI. Faders and Logicators are touch-sensitive and motorised; the whole system is driven by the Encore software, which allows off-line configuration editing.
The surface documented in the user manual is a 24-fader frame, expandable to 96 inputs and 16 auxiliary busses, with low-noise remote mic amps, an optional hard-disk recorder and an optional meter bridge.
