The AMS Neve Capricorn is an assignable digital mixing console introduced in 1993 and billed by its maker as the world's first large-format digital console, scalable to as many as 256 signal paths. Its architecture pairs a modular surface of physical strips (from 24 to 72 faders) with an Assignable Facilities Unit (AFU): any strip can be assigned to control any signal path.
The rotary controls, called FACs (Function Assignable Controls), feature LED collars and can be reassigned to gain, aux sends, pan/width or EQ functions. Each path offers an expander/gate, compressor, limiter, filters, equaliser and a movable insert point in the signal chain. The whole surface is fully automatable (faders, mutes, aux, pan, EQ, dynamics) with parameter storage and recall.
A typical configuration (System 112) provides 32 mic/line inputs, 24 AES/EBU stereo digital inputs/outputs, 48 track sends, 64 track returns, 16 auxiliaries, 8 cues, 16 sub-groups and 4 main outputs, with 32 repositionable insert points. A CXS Surround option introduced in the late 1990s added 5.1 and 7.1 formats. About 105 Capricorns were built between 1993 and 2001, the first installed in Abbey Road's Penthouse studio.
