Our take
History & design
The Yamaha ProMix 01 is a programmable digital mixing console launched in 1994, often cited as the first to make automated digital mixing genuinely affordable: around $1,999 at launch. It is an 18 × 2 mixer — 16 mono channels and one stereo channel — with 8 XLR mic/line inputs, 8 jack inputs, a stereo input and a Track 1 input, plus analogue stereo and S/PDIF outputs.
All inputs are analogue, but from conversion onward the audio stays digital for the entire mix: levels, panning and EQ. Conversion uses 20-bit linear A/D converters (64× oversampling) and 20-bit D/A converters (8× oversampling on the stereo output). Frequency response is quoted at 20 Hz–20 kHz (+1 / −3 dB), with less than 0.1% THD and a typical 105 dB dynamic range.
The console brings scene memories, full MIDI control, two internal effects processors, three dynamics processors and motorised faders — a feature set unheard of at this price in 1994. The ProMix 01 paved the way for the 02R and 03D that followed, and remains a historic milestone in democratised digital mixing.
