Introduced by Solid State Logic in 1993, OmniMix sits at the top of the British brand's digital post-production family — SoundNet, ScreenSound, Scenaria — as Scenaria's “multi-format big brother.” It carries over all of Scenaria's capabilities: a 24-track random-access recorder, multi-channel editor, 38-channel digital mixing system and random-access video playback, in a single workstation aimed at film and television mixing.
Its distinguishing feature is surround. OmniMix adds a configurable output-bus structure for 4, 5 or 6-channel surround and a wide variety of stem mixes. Two in-house technologies set it apart: MotionTracking™, which dynamically automates panning to an exact position in the surround field, and Spatial Processing™, offering advanced digital audio effects to emulate objects moving through space and time. Integrated with the SoundNet network — which SSL presented as the only multi-user digital audio network — it shared a central disk-based sound database, removing the need to copy audio between projects.
SSL's digital post-production work earned it the Queen's Award for Technological Achievement. OmniMix belongs to that pivotal period when film post moved from tape to disk and discovered computer-assisted surround mixing; as such it is a rare and historically important system-console. (Some quantified specs — sample rate, converter resolution — remain to be confirmed against SSL documentation.)
