History & design
The Solid State Logic Avant is a large digital console for mixing to picture — film, post-production and broadcast — launched in the late 1990s. True to SSL philosophy, it keeps a discrete « knob-per-function » control surface: every function has its own control, reducing operator fatigue and speeding access to the right parameter, while relying on digital automation and total reset.
The architecture is modular and scalable: from a compact single-operator desk to a twin-processor, three-operator « superconsole », with dedicated Music, Dialogue and Effects sections and shared I/O resources. In its top processing configuration the Avant handles over a thousand audio paths (around 380 inputs, 64 main mix buses, 64 tape returns, 48 pre-dub buses, 24 aux outputs and 192 insert points) and per-source surround panning up to 7.1. The Avant Plus variant adds the SSL HS Automation Computer, « INFO » faders, a TFT display and the NiTECH Super-Pre option. It was found in many post studios worldwide (BBC Resources in the UK, installs in the USA, Japan, Italy, France…).
