Our take
History & design
The Allen & Heath iLive-R72 is a compact, rack-mountable digital control surface belonging to the iLive system. In the iLive architecture the surface and the mix engine are physically separate: the R72 performs no audio processing itself; it remote-controls an iDR MixRack (RackExtra engine, 64 channels x 32 mixes, 8 FX engines) to which it connects over the proprietary ACE network — audio and control on a single Cat5 cable, up to 120 metres.
The surface offers 12 motorised faders across 2 banks of 6 layers (up to 72 control strips), a backlit colour touchscreen, a per-strip 'write-on' LCD (name, colour, mix status) and 8 assignable SoftKeys. It carries its own local audio I/O at the mix position: 4 line in and 4 line out on TRS jack, 2 RCA phono in and out, S/PDIF I/O, a monitor output, a talkback mic (48V) and headphones. System-side: a 2-port Ethernet switch, two USB ports, MIDI in/out, a VGA output for an external monitor and a lamp socket.
As with the whole iLive system, the R72 supports various network protocols through option cards fitted in the MixRack (Dante, MADI, EtherSound, ACE), letting it slot into broadcast or multi-console infrastructures. The system was later superseded by the GLD and then dLive ranges in Allen & Heath's catalogue.
