Our take
History & design
The dLive S5000 is a control surface for Allen & Heath's dLive system, launched in 2014. It performs no audio processing on its own: mixing is handled by the MixRack (DM32, DM48 or DM64), which houses the FPGA-based XCVI processing core. The surface drives that engine over a gigaACE link on a network cable.
The system offers up to 128 input channels and 64 mix buses at a 96 kHz sampling rate, with a stated latency of 0.7 ms. The S5000 carries 28 motorised faders assignable across six layers, 28 rotary encoders, 26 SoftKeys and two 12-inch capacitive touchscreens running the Harmony UI. The surface also provides 8 mic/line inputs, 8 line outputs and AES3 digital I/O.
Network connectivity (Dante, Waves SoundGrid, MADI, ACE, fibreACE) is provided by 128-channel I/O ports on the MixRack. The system can also be controlled remotely through the dLive MixPad and OneMix apps and the dLive Director software.
