History & design
The SAS Rubicon is a broadcast console control surface (on-air and production) introduced in 2003 by Sierra Automated Systems. In the SAS approach the surface holds no engine: mixing and routing are handled by the remote router/DSP engine (the 32KD system, later an IP engine), to which the Rubicon connects over CAT5.
The chassis is a passive mainframe housing independent, hot-swappable plug-in modules, in sizes from 8 to around 40 fader channels. Each input module carries a display (LCD, then HiRez OLED on the R2 generation) giving access to source select, channel mode, pan, phase and mix-minus. Routing offers Program, Offline, CUE/PFL and Aux buses, with eight manually assignable send buses and an unlimited number of assigns via SAS software or under TV production automation. Audio transport relies on Dante (AoIP), with modules communicating over RS485 on RJ45. The recent R2 variant reuses the Rubicon module format with new processors, extra-large Penny & Giles faders and an external meter bridge.
