Our take
History & design
Xrange is Harrison's digital processing platform, born from a three-year research project: a 64-bit audio engine running on Linux, on off-the-shelf computers linked over Ethernet, breaking with the proprietary systems of earlier generations. A Harrison system of this generation combines an application-specific control surface (MPC for film, Trion for production, Air24 for radio), an Xrange processing engine and an IKIS automation computer.
Processing runs in floating point at 96 kHz, with the 'Harrison Digital Tools' (HDT) effects. A typical film configuration (MPC) reached 384 channels, each with two inputs, an 8-band EQ and dynamics processing. Xrange was first deployed with the Air24 surface for radio broadcast before spreading across Harrison's whole digital range.
The platform is complemented by Xdubber, a recorder/workstation optimised for floating-point stem recording and playback, developed with the open-source community on the Ardour software. Xrange is the technological foundation that paved the way for Harrison's current consoles (MPC5 and beyond).
