Our take
History & design
The Avid Pro Tools | S6 is a modular control surface launched in September 2013. Its development brought together the teams behind the ICON (Digidesign) surfaces and the System 5 (Euphonix, acquired by Avid in 2010). The M40 engine is its most complete variant.
The surface is built around a Master Touch Module to which fader modules, Knob Modules and Display Modules are added. An M40 configuration can combine up to 46 modules and 64 motorised faders, with up to 9 knobs per channel. The Display Modules, exclusive to the M40, provide detailed metering and scrolling waveforms editable directly from the surface.
Communication uses EUCON over Ethernet: the S6 directly controls Pro Tools and other compatible DAWs, and can drive up to eight workstations simultaneously on the network. The M40 engine differs from the M10 (limited to 24 faders and without Display Modules) and replaces, in Avid's catalogue, the earlier D-Control and System 5 MC.
