History & design
The Avid VENUE | S3L-X is a digital live mixing system launched in 2013, built around three parts: the S3 control surface, the E3 engine and the remote Stage 16 I/O box. The three communicate over Avid's own low-latency AVB network, allowing up to 64 channels of I/O at 48 kHz.
The S3 surface offers 16 channel strips/faders (expandable to 6 fader banks) and 32 encoders with high-resolution OLED displays and a tri-colour indicator (16 assignable, 8 channel, 8 global), plus 16 × 10-segment meters. Operation runs through the VENUE software on an external screen, with I/O added by simple drag-and-drop.
The system is highly scalable: a Stage 16 box connects via a single Ethernet cable, and the System 16 / 32 / 64 bundles include one, two or four Stage 16 units respectively. Thanks to Pro Tools integration, the S3L-X records up to 64 tracks and also doubles as a studio controller (EUCON), making it a popular live/studio bridge.
