History & design
The ICON D-Control is the large control surface of Digidesign's integrated ICON system (2004), built around Pro Tools|HD. It is not a console with its own audio path: processing and I/O are handled by Pro Tools and 192 I/O converters, while the surface tactilely drives all recording, editing, routing, mixing and automation functions. The system also includes the XMON analog monitor controller (up to 7.1) and its communications (talkback) system.
The base configuration is 16 faders plus a centre section; common models offer 32 faders, and the surface expands to 80 faders via 16-channel modules. Each strip pairs a touch-sensitive motorised Penny & Giles fader (-inf to +12 dB), six rotary encoders with LED rings, scribble strips and mode keys. The centre section groups dynamics, EQ, surround panning (with screen and joysticks) and window management. An ES version appeared later.
