Our take
History & design
The Digidesign Control|24 is a control surface for Pro Tools, developed jointly with Focusrite and launched in 2001. It combines 24 channel strips, each with a touch-sensitive 100 mm motorised fader (0.1 dB resolution), a rotary encoder with an LED ring, illuminated mute/solo/select keys, a 2-row x 8-character LCD and a stereo bargraph.
Beyond control, the Control|24 brings a real analogue front end: 16 Focusrite mic/line/DI preamps (high-pass filter and variable gain), a 5.1 monitor section and an 8-channel stereo line sub-mixer routable to monitoring. It connects to the host computer via a 10 Base-T Ethernet connector (control protocol only; audio flows through the Pro Tools interface).
Positioned below the ProControl in the Digidesign range, it was replaced in 2007 by the C|24 (Avid), which carries on the concept. The Control|24 remains sought-after as a compact, musical Pro Tools studio front end.
