History & design
The Summa is Calrec's 'simplified' broadcast console, introduced in 2013 (first shown as Callisto). Its guiding idea: bring the power of a large Calrec to a clean interface driven by a 17-inch multitouch screen, tablet-inspired, using familiar touch gestures to navigate the system.
Processing rests on the Bluefin2 engine, which offers a pool of processing paths (up to 180 assignable as mono, stereo or 5.1). Because there is no resource-sharing in the DSP, all facilities are available on every channel at all times. The bus structure comprises 8 groups, 4 mains (mono/stereo/5.1), 16 auxes and 32 tracks, with dedicated delay on all paths and complete system redundancy.
The surface comes in fixed 20-, 32- and 44-fader formats (12+8, 24+8, 36+8). The system pairs a control surface with a 'Summa Core' processing core linked by fibre (SFP), and relies on Calrec's Hydra2 audio network and I/O boxes. It targets TV control rooms and OB trucks that want efficiency and a fast learning curve.
