History & design
The Allen & Heath SQ-7 is a digital mixing console launched in 2018, the flagship of the SQ series (above the SQ-5 and SQ-6). It is built around the XCVI FPGA core clocked at 96 kHz, giving it latency below 0.7 ms.
The surface has 32+1 motorised faders (33 total) across six layers with dedicated keys for inputs, mixes, FX sends and returns, DCA masters and MIDI control. The architecture processes 48 input channels to L/R and 12 stereo mixes (48-channel / 36-bus). Every input has a high-pass filter, a fast gate with sidechain, a 4-band parametric EQ and a Peak/RMS compressor; every mix gets a parametric EQ, a 28-band graphic EQ and a compressor. Eight stereo FX engines (RackExtra library) round things off, with 16 assignable SoftKeys and 8 Soft Rotaries.
The rear panel offers 32 mic preamps, stereo inputs, an AES output, SLink ports for stageboxes (AB168, AR2412, AR84, DX168, up to 48 mic inputs), a USB 3.0 port for multitrack recording and an I/O port for an optional card — SQ Dante 64×64, SQ Waves (SoundGrid) 64×64, among others.
