History & design
The SSL Matrix is a hybrid mixing console introduced in 2008: a fully analog audio path, in SuperAnalogue circuitry, placed under digital control and routing. It carries 16 line-level channel strips (40 line inputs in total) and 16 motorised faders used for both analog mixing and DAW control.
Its distinctive feature is the integrated insert router: external analog outboard (compressors, EQs, boutique preamps) is inserted and recalled 'like plug-ins', with no physical patchbay. Total Recall stores routing and switch settings, and up to six SSL X-Rack units can be integrated into the system to extend processing.
The Matrix also controls several DAWs over Ethernet (soft-keys, plug-in parameters, transport), with a full monitoring section (main, mini, cans), FX sends and stereo returns. It was succeeded by the Matrix2, then the Matrix2 δelta.
