History & design
The Roland VS-1680 is a compact digital audio workstation from the V-Studio range, released in 1998 between the VS-880 and the VS-1880. It combines a hard-disk multitrack recorder (16 tracks, 256 virtual tracks), a digital mixer, per-channel parametric EQ and an expandable effects engine in a single unit.
Recording runs at 24-bit (MT Pro mode) through 20-bit converters, with 8 analogue inputs including two phantom-powered XLRs. Effects rely on the optional VS8F-2 boards (up to two, for eight independent effect channels). A 320 x 240 graphic LCD shows meters, waveforms, EQ curves and effect parameters. Storage is on an internal IDE hard drive, with CD-R burning via the optional VS-CDR drive. The V-Xpanded system upgrade extended its mixing and effects features later in its life.
