When people talk about “East Coast” and “West Coast” synthesis, they don’t mean rap or a musical style, but two fundamentally opposed ways of building a sound from nothing. Both date to the late 1960s and to two engineers who, thousands of miles apart, answered the same question — “how do you bring an electrical voltage to life?” — in radically different ways. Understanding that split is understanding why your synth behaves the way it does, and opening the door to sounds subtraction alone will never hand you.
East Coast: start rich, then take away
On the East Coast, in New York, Robert Moog laid the foundations of what we now call subtractive synthesis. The principle is intuitive: start with a harmonically rich waveform — sawtooth, square — then remove what’s in excess. The signal runs through a now-canonical chain: an oscillator (VCO) generating the raw timbre, a filter (VCF), usually low-pass, shaving off harmonics, and an amplifier (VCA) shaping volume over time. The whole thing is driven by ADSR-type envelopes (attack, decay, sustain, release) and LFOs.
That architecture underpins the overwhelming majority of synths you know: Minimoog, ARP, but also the Roland Juno and Jupiter, the Prophets and a large share of software synths. It’s predictable, musical and perfectly suited to the keyboard. West Coast: start simple, then enrich
On the West Coast, in California, Don Buchla approached the problem backwards. Rather than tame an already-rich wave, he starts from a simple shape — a sine, a triangle — and adds harmonics through active processes. This is the realm of wavefolding, cross-modulation between oscillators (FM, AM) and so-called “complex” oscillators where two sources modulate each other. Where East Coast shaves down, West Coast sculpts harmonic material out of nothing.
The differences don’t stop at timbre generation. Two signature building blocks set Buchla’s school apart:
- the low-pass gate (LPG) replaces the filter + VCA pair. Driven by an optical cell (vactrol), it closes both volume and spectrum with a “percussive,” organic behavior — that unmistakable way Buchla sounds have of ringing like struck instruments;
- function generators and sequencers replace the ADSR and, often, the keyboard itself. You don’t “play” a Buchla like a piano: you program it, trigger it, let it evolve through touch plates and control voltages.

Today, the line is blurring
It would be wrong to think modern synths pick a side. If anything, the trend is reconciliation. Make Noise’s famous 0-Coast wears the idea in its very name: “no coast” — neither East nor West, but the best ideas from both. That’s exactly the promise of the Vannes Devices Obsidian, which places a Moog-style filter and a Californian-tradition wavefolder side by side. Recognizing the two schools by ear
Theory is one thing, listening is another — and that’s where it all gets concrete. An East Coast sound is recognizable by its roundness and predictability: a full bass that “barks” as you open the filter, that resonance meowing as it crosses the cutoff frequency, a warm, singing filter sweep. It’s the vocabulary of pop, house and melodic techno: controlled, musical, reassuring. A West Coast sound, by contrast, intrigues before it seduces: metallic timbres and inharmonic bells born of wavefolding, “plucky” attacks and short resonances straight from the low-pass gate, textures that morph on their own without you touching a knob. You’ll meet it in ambient, experimental music and film sound design. Train your ear to isolate these signatures: it’s the fastest shortcut to understanding, on first listen, how a patch was built — and to recreating it on any machine.
Which should a beginner choose?
If you want immediately musical sounds — pads, basses and leads that respond to the keyboard — go East Coast: it’s the best-signposted, most intuitive path, and the one least likely to trip you up on abstraction. If you’re drawn to metallic percussion, evolving textures, organized noise and a more experimental take on gesture, West Coast opens a playground subtraction never sees. And if you’re torn, a hybrid semi-modular remains the best entry point: it lets you taste both grammars without boxing you in, and teaches you to think in signal flow rather than presets.
One field note to close: don’t be intimidated by the mysticism that sometimes surrounds West Coast. It’s not a religion, it’s a toolbox. A wavefolder isn’t “better” than a low-pass filter — it does something else. The real skill, the one that transfers from one synth to the next, is understanding what each module does to the signal. The rest — brand and coast included — is just scenery.
