History & design
The Mackie Control Universal (MCU) is a control surface for digital audio workstations, launched in 2003 as an evolution of the original Mackie Control. It offers nine 100 mm motorised touch-sensitive Alps faders (eight channels plus a master), eight V-Pot rotary encoders with LED collars, per-channel mute/solo/rec keys and a full transport section with jog/shuttle wheel.
Its strength is compatibility: three modes cover most of the market — Mackie Control (Cubase, Nuendo, Sonar, Digital Performer, Samplitude…), Logic Control for Logic, and HUI emulation for Pro Tools — switched via Lexan overlays. Connection is over MIDI (USB arrived with the MCU Pro). Extra eight-fader banks add on through the Mackie Control XT.
