Our take
History & design
The StudioLive 16.4.2 is PreSonus's first digital console, launched in 2009. Its name spells out its architecture: 16 channels, 4 subgroups, 2 main busses. Every mic/line channel has a Class A XMAX preamp, and the Fat Channel processing (high-pass filter, gate/expander, compressor, limiter and 4-band semi-parametric EQ) is available on every channel, every aux and every subgroup.
The mix section offers 6 aux busses, a stereo 31-band graphic EQ on the main bus and four dual-mono 31-band graphic EQs on the auxes. Unlike the screen-based consoles of its day, the 16.4.2 keeps a dedicated-control surface, without motorised faders, with settings recalled through software.
Its decisive feature is the built-in 32-in / 18-out FireWire interface, in 24-bit, which turns the console into a multitrack recording interface. Virtual StudioLive, Capture and Universal Control round out the package, with Studio One Artist included.
