Ever since iZotope Iris 2 was discontinued, a certain kind of instrument had been missing: the one that lets you play not notes, but an image of the sound. Dillon Bastan, known for his inventive Max for Live devices, fills that gap with Iota II, a visual multi-sampler that pushes the idea far beyond the original. The developer calls it an “experimental Photoshop for audio”, a marketing line, but one that captures what it actually does.
The spectrogram as a playing surface
The heart of Iota II is a spectrogram you draw on. The horizontal axis is position in the sample, the vertical axis is filtering position: by tracing a path, you define a playback trajectory that can move forward, backward, up, down or diagonally through the material. You leave behind the classic linear playback of a sampler and navigate the sound like a map.

The instrument holds up to six samples and lets you draw up to twelve paths per project, each with its own playback, effects and sequencing settings. Three engines live side by side — normal, spectral and resynthesis — alongside a granular mode and a scrub mode for point-to-point movement. In other words, the same sample can be played as a raw sample, broken into grains, or rebuilt spectrally, depending on the path you give it.
Filtering, effects and modulation that breaks the mould
For shaping, Iota II offers spectral and biquadratic filtering, plus a small set of built-in effects: delay, overdrive, sample reduction and ring modulation. Modulation is generous: two LFOs, envelopes and MPE support for expressive playing. The most original touch is the auto emit mode, a physics-based logic where “attractors” trigger playback for you, leaving strict MIDI triggering for something more organic, almost generative. It can even turn an image into a sequence, right in line with its visual approach.
This philosophy is not an outlier. We recently saw the Bitwig Studio 6.1 sampler go granular and spectral, and Minimal Audio Lucid rebuild sound grain by grain. Iota II stands out for its interface: where others hide synthesis behind menus, it lays it out as a manipulable image. Formats, platforms and price
Iota II ships as a VST3, AU and LV2 plugin, plus a standalone app, on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Linux and Windows, broad compatibility, Linux included, still rare among instrument developers. It is priced at $60, with a free trial to try before you buy. At that price it is closer to an impulse buy than an investment, which suits an exploration instrument. It echoes the return of another cult developer, Tweakbench with Tendril: the scene of small, inventive makers is in good health.
My take
Iota II does exactly what you hoped for after Iris 2, and more: it makes sound design tactile, almost playful, without sacrificing depth. Drawing your playback into a spectrogram changes how you hunt for a texture, you find things you would never have programmed from a keyboard. At $60, with a trial and Linux support, there is no reason to skip it if you like digging into sound. The flip side: this is an exploration instrument, not a factory of session-ready presets. Whether you want a tool or a playground is the real question.
